My great grandfather was in the 7th Light Horse Regiment during World War 1. This blog is simply to post information relating to the 7th ALH, which seems to garner a little less attention than some other regiments. I'm not a historian, or an expert. But hopefully something will be posted here that is of use to others.

Books pertaining to the 7th Light Horse Regiment

A first point for learning about the 7th LHR in World War 1 are publications that deal directly with the 7th.

Three volumes of the official history are particularly constructive:

Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918, Volume I – The Story of ANZAC from the outbreak of war to the end of the first phase of the Gallipoli Campaign, May 4, 1915
C.E.W Bean, 1921

Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918, Volume II – The Story of ANZAC from 4 May, 1915, to the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula
C.E.W Bean, 1924

Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918, Volume VII - The Australian Imperial Force in Sinai and Palestine: 1914 - 1918, H.S. Gullett, 1923

These are available online (http://www.awm.gov.au/histories/index.asp) thankfully, as individual volumes are now very expensive. Many local and school libraries hold copies also.

The official history is exceedingly rare - an initial run of 200 numbered copies was prepared in 1919, and a re-print of a few hundred from the early 80's also exists. State libraries in Australia holds copies:

J.D. Richardson, The history of the 7th Light Horse Regiment A.I.F. , (Sydney: Radcliffe Press, 1919).

More recently, edited diaries and memoirs, and histories, have been published that cover the 7th Light Horse.

Baly, Lindsay "Horseman, Pass By - The Australian Light Horse in World War 1" 2003
Note: available through book-sellers such as Amazon

Barclay, R. "Nat D. Barton's Letters Home 1914-1918 War" 1999
Note: not available for purchase - very limited edition though one or two copies are in libraries. Particularly frustrating as copying of the original diaries held at the Australian War Memorial is not allowed.

Shepherdson A. "Journey's of a Light Horseman" 2002
Note: Available through rare book dealers

The reprint of the Australian 7th Light Horse Regiment is now available. A great alternative for those who can't find or afford a rare 1st edition.
